Yes. We have many students who travel with someone else, and they are more than welcome to stay with you during your time at the Thailand TEFL Academy. Note: only registered and paid students of the Thailand TEFL Academy are permitted on the school campus.

How do we get to and from class?

The Thailand TEFL Academy runs a complimentary scheduled shuttle service between our partner hotel and the school twice daily (8:45 am and 2:45 pm). Should you miss the shuttle, you will be responsible for sourcing your own transport. Our campus is only a five minute commute from our partner hotel.

Is accommodation included in the tuition fees?

We are proud to partner with the highly accommodating Boonjumnong Modern Apartments to offer our students a "home away from home" feel at a deeply discounted rate. Everything is included in our flat fee (utilities, WiFi, swimming pool, cleaning services, etc.), so there will be no surprises at check out. Our hotel add on is valid for your 30 day stay while on the course. Should you choose to prolong your stay, you will need to locate your own accommodation following your 30 day stay. We worked hard to find the best deal without sacrificing quality or safety, so we hope you're pleased with our partnership! We have also blocked our rooms so your fellow students will be nearby offering a real community type feel.

What materials are we expected to bring for the course?

Although all course training materials are provided by the Thailand TEFL Academy, you will be expected to source your own materials for your actual teaching practices. This includes props, flashcards, markers, handouts, prizes, etc. There are two major shopping centers (Tesco and Big C) within a short distance of the school - Tesco is right next door to our partner hotel should you choose to stay there, so you can purchase these items once you arrive. Also, we highly suggest bringing a laptop or other device and copies of any qualifications/credentials as those will be needed for your career search.

What is the dress code?

While in the training center/classroom, the dress code is casual. We suggest bringing a jacket in the event you get cold in the air conditioned classroom. When observing or teaching a lesson, you will need a smart set of clothes for your teaching practices. Ladies should have their shoulders covered, a dress/skirt/trousers is fine. Men should wear long trousers and a long or short sleeved shirt (no ties are needed for Samui). Jeans, shorts, bikini tops, sarongs, fishermen’s trousers and flip flops for teaching or observations are not appropriate. Tattoos should also be covered and jewelry kept to a minimum. To keep track of time while doing your observed teaching practices, we suggest wearing a wrist watch.

Will we be teaching children or adults?

Throughout your guaranteed six hours of live teaching practices, you will gain the valuable experience of teaching both children and adults. There are different teaching methods used for each, both of which you will learn about during your classroom training time. Upon graduation, it's our goal for you to feel comfortable teaching ESL to learners of any age.

What are the hours we’re expected in class?

What is the best way to get to Samui?

There are numerous options when traveling to the island of Samui. The first is to fly direct into the Samui International Airport. You can also fly into the mainland at Surat Thani Airport. There you would board a bus to the ferry over to Samui (Nathon Ferry Port).

How long does it take to get to our hotel from the airport or ferry port?

It takes roughly 15 minutes to get from the airport to our partner hotel and around 30 minutes from the Nathon ferry port.

How much should we expect to pay for a taxi to the hotel?

If you arrive on Samui outside the window of the complimentary shuttle service you should expect to pay around 600 baht/person for a taxi from the Nathon Ferry Port,. From the airport, around 400 baht/person. Songthaew’s (a pick-up truck with a converted bed) are much less and more negotiable than the taxi services.

What type of visa do I need?

As laws are constantly changing in Thailand, we highly suggest checking with your local Thai consulate for the most up-to-date information. Most students come in on a tourist visa which can be extended at the immigration office here on the island of Samui.

Will my phone work in Thailand?

We highly suggest checking with your carrier to ensure your mobile device will work in Thailand or anywhere abroad. You will also want to ask about any roaming fees associated with international calls. Most students choose the option of buying a SIM card for use while in Thailand.

Do I need a criminal background check?

A criminal record check is not required by most schools in Thailand yet. This being said, it would be a good idea to obtain one just in case rules change quickly. Bringing one with you will mean one less bit of paperwork to complete in Thailand.

Do I need health or travel insurance?

It is always a good idea to take out health/travel insurance before you travel overseas. You may want to look at local insurance companies in your own area to provide travel insurance for periods of up to one year. Alternatively, you can purchase international insurance here on the island through our partner, William Russell (contact our Director of Studies for more information). Should you choose to rent a motorbike, insurance is highly suggested.

Do I need vaccinations?

Although vaccinations are not necessary for travel to Thailand you should consult your medical physician prior to traveling abroad. Malaria is not present on Samui, but you should take precautions such as using a spray repellent in the evenings. These can be bought cheaply in most stores here, so you do not need to buy them before you arrive.

Do I need to open a local bank account?

If you plan to live and work in Thailand, you will need to open an account. All you need to open a Thai bank account is your passport. The most popular banks are Krung Thai and SCB Bank which are found just about everywhere! When you start work at a school they may specify a certain bank in which case they will assist you with this process.

How do I rent a motorbike or car?

There are countless places to rent transportation on the island, including our partner hotel. Motorbikes generally cost around 150/200 Thai baht per day or 2,500/3,000 baht per month. As a safety precaution, helmets should always be warn, and we highly suggest having insurance prior to renting any motor vehicle. The TEFL Thailand Academy will not be held responsible for injuries or damages sustained during your time on Samui.

Where can I do my laundry?

There are numerous local laundry facilities located down the street from our partner hotel. Rates are extremely inexpensive and most places have next day pick up.
